I have just added another 11 new songs into high rotation from the following newly released classic rock albums:
John Mellencamp – Other People’s Stuff … This is an interesting album from the Hall-Of-Fame singer-songwriter. He has put 10 songs into a compilation that have never been together before – including some of his own, some of of his own remixed and reworked, and some covers of other people’s songs. All done in his own unique honest style. Listen for the tracks To The River and I Don’t Know Why I Love You (a Stevie Wonder song). Read the review here.
Van Morrison – The Prophet Speaks… This is the Belfast Cowboy’s fourth album in two years – and continues his exploration of his jazz influences. It contains a half dozen of his own songs mixed among covers of songs by John Lee Hooker, Solomon Burke and Sam Cook. Listen for the tracks Gotta Get You Off My Mind and Gonna Send You Back To Where I Got You. Read the review here.
Neil Young – Songs For Judy … Collecting two-dozen highlights from 1976 solo sets, this candid document finds the singer sorting through old standards and almost-lost classics at a particularly restless moment of his career. Listen for the songs Too Far Gone and Mr. Soul. Read the review here.
Big Brother & The Holding Company – Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills … Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills is what the band wanted to call their second album. The record company of the day nixed that idea and it was shortened to just Cheap Thrills. This expanded release contains all the original songs from the album that vaulted Janis Joplin into super stardom – plus a batch of outtakes and never-released-before material. Listen for the tracks It’s A Deal (Take 1) and Flower In the Sun (Take 3). Read the review here.
Bryan Ferry – Bitter-Sweet … This album finds Ferry remaking/remodeling the songs of his former band Roxy Music through an older jazz interpretation. Some of the songs succeed and some don’t – but they are definitely interesting. Listen for the tracks While My Heart Is Still Beating and Sign Of the Times. Read the review here.
Marianne Faithfull – Negative Capability … This is a unique album from a unique singer – and is arguably her best and most honest work since Broken English. Listen for the cover of the Rolling Stone song As Tears Go By. Read the review here.
If you have been listening to the station over the past few days – you will also notice I have added some Christmas/Holiday music into the playlist. Not a lot – but enough to hopefully help get you into the spirit of giving.
Merry Christmas from Choice Classic Rock!
