Santana – In Search Of Mona Lisa … This 3 song EP was inspired by Carlos Santana‘s near-mystical viewing of the Mona Lisa while visiting The Louvre in Paris, France. The enigmatic lady apparently “spoke” to him – and three months later he dreamed the lyrics for two of these songs. Heart – Live In Atlantic City … The bands 2006 VH-1 concert in Atlantic City’s Decades Rock arena has finally been released. It features a host of guest artists helping the Wilson sisters and band (including Dave Navarro of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Alice In Chains, Rufus Wainwright and Carrie Underwood). Steve Hackett – At The Edge Of Light … This is new album from the ex-Genesis guitar player showcases his extraordinary talent and song writing ability. Joe Jackson – Fool
Joe Jackson – Fool … Always thought provoking – the musical chameleon returns with a back-to-basic recording that may be one of his best albums in years. Listen for the tracks Friend Better and 32 Kisses. Read the review here.
Walter Trout – Survivor Blues … This old school blues-rock talent has recorded an album of lesser-known blues tracks that strike a rare balance between the past and its relevance to contemporary times. The Christmas/New Years holiday stretch is a very slow time for new music releases, but things should (hopefully) start picking up soon. To tide you over with new stuff I have added the following newly released classic rock tracks into high rotation:
Bruce Springsteen – Brilliant Disguise … From the album Springsteen On Broadway – this track features Springsteen doing a lovely duet with his wife Patti Scialfa. This new album is the soundtrack of the concert currently streaming on Netflix (in America). Read the review here.
Paul McCartney – Get Enough … this single from the ex-Beatle dropped on New Years Day and features McCartney experimenting with auto-tune. It was recorded during the sessions for his latest album Egypt Station but was not included in that recording.
Brian May – New Horizons (Ultima Thule Mix) … this single from the Queen guitar player is his first new solo music in 20 years. It was released to mark the voyage of the New Horizons space probe as it passed by the trans-Neptunian object Ultima Thule – the farthest object in the solar system that a spacecraft has visited. The probe’s voyage was especially meaningful to May, an astrophysicist, since he had joined NASA’s science team as a collaborator on the project in 2015.
Heart – Lost Angel … this single is from the upcoming album Heart – Live In Atlantic City which is due for release on January 25th, 2019. This live version of the song (which was originally released in 2004 on the album Jupiters Darling) showcases the strength of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Wilson sisters.

John Mellencamp – Other People’s Stuff … This is an interesting album from the Hall-Of-Fame singer-songwriter. He has put 10 songs into a compilation that have never been together before – including some of his own, some of of his own remixed and reworked, and some covers of other people’s songs. All done in his own unique honest style. Listen for the tracks To The River and I Don’t Know Why I Love You (a Stevie Wonder song). Read the review here.
Van Morrison – The Prophet Speaks… This is the Belfast Cowboy’s fourth album in two years – and continues his exploration of his jazz influences. It contains a half dozen of his own songs mixed among covers of songs by John Lee Hooker, Solomon Burke and Sam Cook. Neil Young – Songs For Judy … Collecting two-dozen highlights from 1976 solo sets, this candid document finds the singer sorting through old standards and almost-lost classics at a particularly restless moment of his career. Listen for the songs Too Far Gone and Mr. Soul. Read the review here.
Big Brother & The Holding Company – Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills … Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills is what the band wanted to call their second album. The record company of the day nixed that idea and it was shortened to just Cheap Thrills. This expanded release contains all the original songs from the album that vaulted Janis Joplin into super stardom – plus a batch of outtakes and never-released-before material. Bryan Ferry – Bitter-Sweet … This album finds Ferry remaking/remodeling the songs of his former band Roxy Music through an older jazz interpretation. The Beatles – The White Album 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set … The album is actually called The Beatles – but everyone knows it as The White Album. This magnificent box set includes the original album re-mixed over 2 CDs, a CD containing the 27 track “Esher Demos“, 3 CDs of mostly unreleased studio sessions and a Blue-Ray disc containing a 5.1 surround sound White Album remix and more. David Crosby – Here If You Listen … The 77 year old one-third of Crosby, Stills & Nash delivers a quiet masterpiece of acoustic perfection. Teaming up with the Lighthouse Band really pays dividends and the results are well-worth a listen. Listen for the tracks Glory and a beautiful reworking of the Joni Mitchell song Woodstock. Nazareth – Tattooed On My Brain … The Scottish rock legends celebrate their 50th anniversary with their 24th studio album. Featuring their new vocalist Carl Sentence – the album proves they are still rockin’! Listen for the Track Pole To Pole. Read the review here.

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody (Original Soundtrack) … The soundtrack for the movie is worth every penny. It includes not only some of the more well known Queen classics – but also live versions from their iconic performance at Live Aid (and more!). Listen for the tracks Don’t Stop Me Now (with a reworked Brian May guitar solo) and a live version of Now I’m Here (recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon). Read the review here.
Ace Frehley – Spaceman … The former Kiss guitar player returns with an album of hard rock. Listen for the track Without You I’m Nothing – which was co-written by and features Gene Simmons on bass. Read the review here.
Aldo Nova – Aldo Nova 2.0 … The Canadian guitarist and songwriter returns with a re-recording of six tracks from his original 1981 album (which featured the hit Fantasy), and one new song. Listen for the song Foolin’ Yourself 2.0. Read the review here.
John Hiatt – The Eclipse Sessions … Recorded primarily as a trio with a bassist and drummer, Hiatt returns to the basics with this album that was recorded over a mere six days. Listen for the song Over The Hill (which he definitely isn’t!). Read the review here.
Elvis Costello & The Imposters – Look Now … His first album with The Imposters in 10 years finds the singer/songwriter in fine form. The album is varied and eclectic but all Elvis. Listen for the track Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter. Read the review here.
Blues Traveler – Hurry Up & Hang Around … This album finds Blues Traveler stripping back to the garage band they started out as – which gives us one of their best albums in many a year. Listen for the track Accelerated Nation. Read the review here.
Dave Davies – Decade … One of the founding members of The Kinks (with his brother Ray Davies), has given us an album of songs he was working on nthe 1970s just prior to the release of his first solo album. These songs range from hard rock to pop and are fully fleshed out and would have worked on any Kinks album. Listen for the tracks Give You All My Love and This Precious Time (Long Lonely Road). Graham Parker – Cloud Symbols … Ably backed by The Goldtops (Martin Belmont, Geraint Watkins, Simon Edwards and Roy Dodds) and accompanied by The Rumour Brass on six tracks – Parker‘s 24th album finds him in fine form with an excellent batch of songs. Joe Strummer – Joe Strummer 001 … This album is a retrospective of everything Strummer did after his time helming The Clash. It features a range of styles and everything from duets with Johnny Cash and Jimmy Cliff to his work with The Mescaleros. Listen for the track Letsagetabitarockin’ which he recorded with The 101ers. Doyle Bramhall II – Shades … The latest album from the in-demand singer-songwriter guitarist covers a variety of different styles – yet maintains a honest cohesion. Phil Collins – Plays Well With Others … This 4 CD box set showcases the incredible variety of musical artists that the ex-Genesis drummer/vocalist has collaborated with. Steve Forbert – The Magic Tree … The singer/songwriter’s latest album was supposed to be an album of acoustic demos that would accompany the release of his autobiography Big City Cat: My Life In Folk-Rock, but instead, he hired some musicians and overdubbed new tracks onto the demos, resulting in a delightfully cohesive addition to his catalogue. Paul Weller – True Meanings … The latest album from The Modfather features a surprisingly tender collection of songs from someone who is often thought of as brusque. The album features guest musicians such as Rod Argent (of The Zombies), Noel Gallagher (of Oasis) as well as English folk musicians Martin Carthy and Danny Thompson. Ann Wilson – Immortal … The vocalist for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Heart returns with another album of covers – celebrating the Immortal status of artists who have inspired her career.
