New Classic Rock Releases

New Music For the New Year!

To celebrate the New Year – I have just added 20 new songs into high rotation in the playlist. Eighteen of the songs are from the following newly released classic rock albums:

The Who - WHO
The Who – WHO

The Who – WHORoger Daltrey has called this new release the “best album since Quadrophenia“, and I am hard pressed to dispute this claim. Pete Townshend has crafted some incredible songs with great topical lyrics that are beautifully delivered by a team of crack musicians. Listen for the tracks I Don’t Wanna Get Wise, Hero Ground Zero, This Gun Will Misfire, Rockin’ In Rage and Break The News. Read the review here.

Jimi Hendrix – Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts … This box set captures Hendrix live with the Band Of Gypsys in all his guitar wielding glory. Running approximately five hours, the album boasts forty-three tracks, restored in sequence from Wally Heider’s original recordings over 2 nights. Over two dozen of these tracks have never before been released commercially (or have been newly pressed and newly remixed). Listen for the tracks Fire, Hey Joe and Lover Man. Read the review here.

Pink Floyd – The Later Years … This box set captures the David Gilmour led incarnation of the band, and features remixes of their albums from Momentary Lapse Of Reason onward, as well as remixed and reedited versions of concert films, unreleased footage from various tours, Division Bell outtakes, rehearsals, and more. Listen for a live version of Run Like Hell recorded in Atlanta in 1987, as well as a couple of 1994 instrumental studio outtakes – Marooned Jam and Nervana. Read the review here.

Grateful Dead – Ready Or Not … This new album contains live versions of the six tracks included on the band’s So Many Roads album, plus a further three live songs from the Vince Welnick era. Listen for the track Samba In the Rain. Read the review here.

Gary Numan & The Skaparis Orchestra – When the Sky Came Down … This album was recorded live in Bridgewater Hall in Manchester England with a full orchestra. Numan himself called the experience “one of the highlights of my career”. Listen for the songs Ghost Nation and Everything Comes Down To This. Read the review here.

Marillion – With Friends From the Orchestra … The band has rerecorded some of their extended opuses and lesser known album tracks with a string quartet, flautist and a French Horn player. The album captures the band on a creative high, confident and comfortable in what they’re about and – after all these years – still wanting to push the boundaries and do something new. Listen for the track Seasons End. Read the review here.

Steve Hackett – Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live at the Royal Festival Hall … The former Genesis guitar player also teams up with an orchestra on this live album, on which he covers classics from his earlier solo career, his more recent releases, and a Genesis set list which includes a track from every album he contributed to (skipping The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway). Listen for the song El Nino. Read the review here.

Harry Nilsson – Losst And Founnd … This album is the first posthumous release from the artist. Original producer Mark Hudson has taken the recordings from Nilsson‘s last unfinished recording sessions, spiffed up and completed the tracks, enlisting a number of the artist’s old friends along the way (such as Jimmy Webb, Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, as well as son Kiefo Nilsson). Listen for the track High Heel Sneakers/Rescue Boy Medley. Read the review here.

Molly Hatchet – Battleground … This live album is a well-balanced and all-encompassing taste of the charm that the band has carried with them through the decades, balancing the flair of old-school rockstars with a tasteful twang in both voices and instrumentals. Listen for a live version of their classic Dreams I’ll Never See. Read the review here.

New Singles

The other 2 songs are currently released as singles:

Huey Lewis & The News – While We’re Young … this is the second single from the band’s new album, Weather – which is due for release on February 14th, 2020.

U2 with A. R. Rahman – Ahimsa … this song was released a while ago – but I recently discovered it. U2 wrote the song with Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman. The title of the song is a Sanskrit word for “non-violence”.

The Doors - The Soft Parade (50th Anniversary Edition)
The Doors – The Soft Parade (50th Anniversary Edition)

The Doors – The Soft Parade (50th Anniversary Edition) … The original album, now 50 years old, was always the most controversial of Doors albums. This 3 disc box set answers the question “What would the album sound like if it wasn’t ‘enhanced’ with all the horns and strings?” Several of the tracks on the second disc in this set have had the extras stripped away. Listen for the The Doors Only mixes of the songs Runnin’ Blue and Touch Me. Note: Doors guitar player Robbie Krieger overdubbed extra guitar solos on these tracks – just for this release. Read the review here.

Foreigner – Double Vision: Then and Now … This recording of a 2017 concert at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, celebrates 40 years of the band, features a lineup of former and current members of Foreigner performing an assortment of their greatest hits. Listen for live versions of the songs Double Vision and Hot Blooded. Read the review here.

Steve Miller Band – Welcome To The Vault … This 3 disc box set completely eschews the band’s many hit recordings that powered their career and instead gives us alternate versions, demos, and rare live tracks – 38 of which have not previously been released. A fan’s delight! Listen for the songs Fly Like An Eagle (Alternate Version), Rock’n Me (Alternate Version 1), Swingtown (Alternate Version) and Take The Money and Run (Live/Alternate Version). Read the review here.

Hootie & The Blowfish – Imperfect Circle … This popular band from the 1990s broke up in 2008 but reunited in 2018, recently releasing this new album. Listen for the track Hold On. Read the review here.

David Bowie – Conversation Piece … this five CD box is essentially a superdeluxe Space Oddity special, featuring a total of seventy-five tracks. The material comes from Spying Through A Keyhole, Clareville Grove Demos and The ‘Mercury’ Demos, but also includes a 2009 remaster of the Space Oddity album, a brand new 2019 Tony Visconti remix of the album, twelve previously unreleased additional demos, John Peel’s Top Gear and The Dave Lee Travis Show sessions and a 120 page book. Probably for hard core Bowie fans only – but the Tony Visconti remix sounds glorious. Listen for the song Space Oddity (2019 Remix). Read the review here.

Ronnie Lane with His Live Five – Mad Lad: A Live Tribute To Chuck Berry … This album is the Rolling Stone guitarist’s tribute to Chuck Berry, recorded live in 2018 in England. Listen for the song Rock n’ Roll Music, which features Imelda May on vocals. Read the review here.

Listen for the title track Get The Money. Read the review here.

Robbie Robertson - Sinematic

Robbie Robertson – Sinematic … The former The Band member returns with his first album since 2011. The Allman Brothers Band – Fillmore West ’71

The Allman Brothers Band – Fillmore West ’71 … Just two months before their iconic At Fillmore East, the band were at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West for an epic weekend. Read the review here.

Iggy Pop – Free … The former Stooges 18th studio album finds him continuing down a path away from gnarly garage punk and into what I think is more interesting musical terrain. Listen for the track James Bond. Read the review here.

Status Quo – Backbone … This is the first album of new music the band has produced since the death of founding member Rick Parfitt in 2016, and it marks out a new era for a band that’s already had its share of eras. Listen for the title track Backbone and the song Liberty Lane. Read the review here.

Happy Anniversary Woodstock!

I have just added 21 new songs into high rotation in the playlist. Twenty of the songs are from the following newly released classic rock albums, including 10 tracks from recently released albums celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival, which was held in Bethal, New York in August, 1969:

Woodstock: Back To the Garden - 50th Anniversary
Woodstock: Back To the Garden – 50th Anniversary

Various Artists – Woodstock: Back To the Garden – 50th Anniversary … One of the seminal events of the 1960s – Woodstock helped define an era. Three days of peace and music happened on Max Yasgur‘s farm over the weekend of August 15 to 18, 1969 – and featured live performances from the cream of popular music at the time – all in front of an unexpected audience of 500,000 people. To celebrate the 50th anniversary – Rhino Records has released several different albums – a 3 CD set, a 10 CD set and a definitive archive set of 38 CDs (containing every song by every performer who played at the festival). Since I could not afford the definitive set, I have chosen 8 songs from the 10 CD set and added them to the playlist. Listen for the following tracks: The Band – I Shall Be Released, Blood Sweat & Tears – Spinning Wheel, Janis Joplin – Piece Of My Heart, Crosby Stills Nash & Young – Wooden Ships, Jefferson Airplane – Volunteers, The Who – Shakin’ All Over, Joan Baez – I Shall Be Released, Johnny Winter – Johnny B Goode, Santana – Persuasion and Jimi Hendrix – Izabella. Read the review here.

This album of new southern rock almost escaped my attention until a listener turned me on to it (thanks Miguel Cortés!). Listen for the tracks Shinin’ and All Night. Read the review here.

The Alarm – Sigma … The band’s latest album is a followup to last year’s release Equals, and finds them in familiar territory – still rocking. Listen for the song Can You Feel Me?. Read the review here.

Paul McCartney – Amoeba Gig … McCartney performed a ‘surprise’ show at Amoeba records in Los Angeles on June 27, 2007 to promote his then current album, Memory Almost Full. A few tracks from this performance have been released over the years, but this new release contains the whole show. Listen for the track Get Back. Read the review here.

Mike Love – 12 Sides Of Summer … If you are looking for a blast of summertime music, look no further than this Beach Boy‘s latest release. It features several cover versions and is guaranteed to bring you a breath of fresh summer air! Listen for the song Summertime Blues. Read the review here.
