New Classic Rock Releases

New Thin Lizzy, Springsteen, Young, Yes & More!

I have loaded 25 recently released classic rock songs into high rotation on the station’s playlist – featuring songs from Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Yes and more! Twenty-two of the songs are from the following newly released albums:

Thin Lizzy - Rock Legends
Thin Lizzy – Rock Legends

Thin Lizzy – Rock Legends … This 6CD+DVD set, released to mark the 50th anniversary of the band’s first recording contract, is imbued with the energy and passion with which bassist Phil Lynott and his band mates embraced the rock ’n’ roll life. Thin Lizzy fans will love this box set, as it contains 99 tracks, an impressive 74 of which are previously unreleased. Listen for the demo tracks It’s Going Wrong, Don’t Let Him Slip Away, Blackmail, and Trouble Boys as well as a smoking live version of Chinatown. Read the review here.

Bruce Springsteen – Letter To You … This 20th studio album from The Boss – who recently turned 71 – reunites him with the E Street Band. The songs find him gazing into the past, looking at the ways that music can sustain us, with a deep reverence for what has come before and a sense of loss for those now departed. Listen for the songs Burnin’ Train, Last Man Standing and I’ll See You In My Dreams. Read the review here.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Return To Greendale … This is a live album recorded during a tour where the band performed the entire 2003 studio album Greendale – which tells the story of a fictional town’s inhabitants and how they roll along with larger societal currents. “Return To Greendale commemorates the album and tour that kicked off Young’s overtly eco-political direction, and reveals a career high point.” Listen for the tracks Be The Rain and Falling From Above. Read the review here.

Yes – The Royal Affair Tour: Live From Las Vegas … This live album documents the band’s performance at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on the band’s 2019 American tour. The album “is a strong showing from one of prog rock’s creators and gives us all the happy news that Yes is nowhere near done defining greatness.” Listen for the tracks No Opportunity Necessary No Experience Needed and All Good People. Read the review here.

Tears For Fears – The Seeds Of Love (Super Deluxe Edition) … This box set includes some very interesting (and likeable) versions of the songs found on the original album. “Thanks to this set, we can hear Orzabal assembling ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ from blocks into its unwieldy, epic final form.” Listen for the songs Sowing The Seeds of Love (Alternate Mix) and an expanded Woman In Chains (Townhouse Live Jam Sessions) which features Oleta Adams on vocals. Read the review here.

Tom Petty – Wildflowers & All The Rest … The artist’s original Wildflowers album was released in 1994, but was cut down from the intended double album because of record label concerns over length. This box set gives us a good idea of what the original album may have sounded like if it wasn’t pared back. Among it’s 70 tracks are nine unreleased songs, demos, alternate versions, and 14 live performances recorded from 1995–2017. Listen for live versions of the songs Honey Bee, Walls and You Wreck Me. Read the review here.

David Bowie – Metrobolist … This November is the 50th anniversary of the release in North America of the album The Man Who Sold The World which was originally supposed to be called Metrobolist. To celebrate this anniversary – the album has been remixed by the original producer Tony Visconti and repackaged and retitled with the original album name and concept art. Listen for a remixed version of The Man Who Sold The World. Read the review here.

Martin Barre – 50 Years Of Jethro Tull … This album is not the long-time Jethro Tull guitarist celebrating his tenure in the band by featuring songs drawn from the original source. Rather, it features studio re-recordings of songs from his career with Tull, and is well worth a solid listen. A version of the album was originally sold from the merchandise table during his live shows in 2019. This version of the album now includes an additional 4 live tracks. Listen for the songs Locomotive Breath, Life Is A Long Song and a live version of Bungle In the Jungle. Read the review here.

Patty Smyth – It’s About Time … The former Scandal vocalist returns with her first full solo album since 1992. Listen for the opening track from the album – Drive. Read the review here.

Blue Oyster Cult - The Symbol Remains
Blue Oyster Cult – The Symbol Remains

Blue Oyster Cult – The Symbol Remains … The band returns with their first new studio album since the poorly received 2001 release Curse Of the Hidden Mirror. This new album is a far cry from their last. The songs are well crafted, beautifully played and a joy to listen to. “The incorruptible, irreverent nature of a band that’s existed through every possible rock and metal trope in history shines through on this album”. Listen for the songs Florida Man, Tainted Blood, Edge Of the World and Secret Road. Read the review here.

Bon Jovi – 2020 … After delaying a spring release date (due to you-know-what) the band has finally released this album. Most of the songs are, not surprisingly, overtly political – as the band examines the state of the world we live in today. Listen for the tracks Brothers In Arms and Beautiful Drug. Read the review here.

The Eagles – Live From the Forum MMXVIII … The band spent most of 2018 on the road with an extensive North American tour that found Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit joined by two new bandmates: Deacon Frey (original member Glenn Frey‘s son) and Vince Gill. This album was recorded over 3 nights at The Forum in Los Angeles. Listen for the tracks Lyin’ Eyes, Take It Easy and a very cool version of Hotel California. Read the review here.

Roger Waters – Us + Them … The former Pink Floyd member’s extensive 2017-2018 world tour has been captured on DVD, Blue Ray, CD and digital download. It is Roger Waters at his finest – merging politics, bombast, symbolism and music in a way that only he can. Listen for songs One Of These Days, The Great Gig In the Sky and Money. Read the review here.

Queen + Adam Lambert – Live Around the WorldFreddie Mercury is sadly no longer with us – but Adam Lambert is a surprisingly capable successor to the iconic Queen vocalist. This album was culled from every tour the band has done over the last six years and features some interesting takes and modifications to the bands canon. Listen for tracks Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Somebody To Love. Read the review here.

Lou Reed – New York (Deluxe Edition) … This album contains remastered versions of the songs found on the original 1989 release, as well as a host of extra content. It contains live versions of every track from the album – with a couple of live bonus tracks – as well as a number of demos and rough mixes. Listen for live versions of the songs Dirty Boulevard and Walk On the Wild Side. Read the review here.

John Lennon – Gimme Song Truth (The Ultimate Remixes) … With everything that is going in the world today – we could definitely use some words of wisdom from the Beatle. In its place – we have this set of 36 of his best-known songs (hits and others) – impeccably mixed for maximum impact. Listen for a live version of the track Come Together. Read the review here.

Robert Plant – Digging Deep: Subterranea … This album is a best of compilation from the Led Zeppelin vocalist’s solo catalogue – with a couple of rarities thrown in. Although not presented in chronological order – it showcases how his art has grown and he has steeled himself to remain relevant as he ages. Listen for the unreleased track Nothing Takes the Place Of You. Read the review here.

The Doors – Morrison Hotel (50th Anniversary Edition) … The original album, released in 1970, found the band returning to a more blues-rock template after the instrumental experimentation featured on The Soft Parade. This 50th Anniversary Edition of the album features the original songs remastered and an hour of interesting outtakes. Listen for the unreleased song Money (That’s What I Want). Read the review here.

William Shatner – The BluesCaptain Kirk brings his spoken / half-sung take on the blues on this album. What makes it interesting in the supporting cast he has assembled for the effort, which include the likes of Brad Paisley, Harvey Mandel, Pat Travers, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Steve Cropper and others. Listen for the tracks The Thrill Is Gone (featuring Ritchie Blackmore on guitar) and a cover of the Cream classic Sunshine Of Your Love (featuring Sonny Landreth on guitar). Read the review here.

New Rolling Stones, Savoy Brown & More!

I have loaded 21 recently released classic rock songs into high rotation on the playlist – featuring songs from The Rolling Stones, Savoy Brown and more! Eighteen of the songs are from the following newly released albums:

Savoy Brown - Ain't Done Yet
Savoy Brown – Ain’t Done Yet

Savoy Brown – Ain’t Done Yet … This British blues band – led by founder/guitar player/vocalist Kim Simmonds – has been around since the mid 1960s – and consistently churn out finely crafted, well-played blues rock. This album is no exception. Listen for the tracks All Gone Wrong, Devil’s Highway and Feel Like A Gypsy. Read the review here.

The Rolling Stones – Goats Head Soup (Deluxe Edition) … Often maligned as one of the band’s lesser works – this album which was originally released in 1973 – has been re-released with an additional disc of outtakes and another disc that features live material from a 1973 concert. The new songs fit in nicely and I believe that they probably would have been included on the original release if the length of the vinyl did not limit the number of songs that would fit on a record in 1973. Listen for the songs All The Rage, Scarlet (The Killers & Jacques Lu Cont Remix) which features Jimmy Page on guitar – and a live version of Brown Sugar – which was recorded in Brussels in 1973. Read the review here.

The Allman Betts Band – Bless Your Heart … This is the second album from Devon Allman and Duane Betts – both sons of the original members of the Allman Brothers Band. If the you like southern rock with a bit of a modern twist – you will like this record. Listen for the tracks Pale Horse Rider, Airboats & Cocaine and a 12 minute jam instrumental Savannah’s Dream. Read the review here.

Walter Trout – Ordinary Madness … The blues/rock guitar shaman, singer-songwriter, and street survivor delivers another batch of his heartfelt six-string excursions on his new record. The album was recorded at a private studio owned by Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and is a well written and impeccably played project. Listen for the songs Ordinary Madness, Heaven In Your Eyes and Make It Right. Read the review here.

The Empty Hearts – The Second Album … This is the second album (go figure!) from a band that consists of Elliot Easton (of The Cars), Clem Burke (of Blondie), Wally Palmar (of The Romantics) and Andy Babiuk (of The Chesterfield Kings) . Listen for the tracks The World’s Gone Insane and Remember Days Like These (which features the one and only Ringo Starr on drums). Read the review here.

Nils Lofgren Band – Weathered … Recorded live while the band was touring to support Lofgren‘s most recent studio record – Blue With Lou – this album features the E-Street guitar player in his element – live. Listen for the song Across The Tracks. Read the review here.

Various Artists – Angelheaded Hipster … This double album’s worth of material is being released to celebrate the U.K.’s legends of glam rock – Marc Bolan and his band, T.Rex. Listen for the track Bang A Gong (Get It On) performed by U2 and Elton John. As my 16 year old daughter would say – It’s a banger! Read the review here.

Tokyo Storm – Optimistic State Of Mind … This UK band came to my attention when they emailed me a link to their debut album. Jefferson Starship – Mother Of the Sun … This EP (it’s only 7 songs long) is the first new material released by the band in 12 years. There is only one original member of the band still playing (David Freiberg) – but two of the songs on the new album were written by original band members Grace Slick and the late Marty Balin. This project is extremely varied and touches on jazz, contemporary classical music, pop and rock. Listen for the track My Resolve, which features a duet with vocalist James Mercer (of The Shins). Read the review here.

Nick Lowe – Lay It On MeLowe seems to only be releasing EPs these days. Listen for the songs Here Comes That Feeling and the title track Lay It On Me. Read the review here.

Tom Petty – Wildflowers (Home Recording) … this song is a solo demo recording of the title song for the artist’s 1994 recording. It will be found on the Wildflowers & All the Rest box set, which is due for release on October 16th, 2020. The package’s Super Deluxe Edition features 70 tracks across five CDs, including nine previously unreleased cuts and 34 alternate takes.

Deep Purple - Whoosh!
Deep Purple – Whoosh

Deep Purple – Whoosh! … This is the third album in a row that the band has recorded with producer Bob Ezrin – and is arguably the best of the bunch. It definitely has a Deep Purple sound, but the songs are lithe, full of energy, and the band sounds like they are having a lot of fun. Definitely recommended. Listen for the tracks Step By Step, The Power of the Moon and What For What. Read the review here.

Steve Howe – Love Is … The Yes guitarist’s 12th solo album delivers a very interesting array of alternating instrumentals and sung tracks. Howe is joined by his song Dylan Howe on drums and Jon Davidson who was the Yes vocalist of eight years. Listen for the songs It Ain’t Easy, See Me Through and The Headlands. Read the review here.

New Singles

The other 3 songs are all recently released singles:

Bon Jovi – Do What You Can … this song is from the band’s upcoming album 2020, which was supposed to be released earlier in the year but is now scheduled for release on October 2, 2020. The song was written in March during the pandemic, when the singer asked fans to contribute a second verse based on their own experiences during the lockdown.

Tom Petty – There Goes Angela (Dream Away) … the late singer/songwriter recorded this song during the sessions for his Wildflowers album, which was originally envisioned as a double album, but he was forced to cut several songs when it was cut down to a single album. Some of the lost songs appeared on the She’s the One soundtrack in 1996, but others were placed into Petty’s archive and never heard by the public – until now. This song is available for free on his website – but you have to successfully answer a quiz before you can download the song.

Pretenders - Hate For Sale
Pretenders – Hate For Sale

Pretenders – Hate For SaleChrissie Hynde reunites with the only other original member of the band – drummer Martin Chambers – on the Pretenders 11th studio album. It features a return to form of sorts, as the lead singer and band snarl through an album that’s a composite of punk, new wave and mainstream Eighties pop. Listen for the tracks Maybe Love Is In NYC and the title track Hate For Sale. Read the review here.

Kansas – The Absence of Presence … America’s most famous prog band returns with their first album since 2016’s The Prelude Implicit. If you love the violin in Kansas – you will love this album – as it features more violin solos than the band is usually known for. Listen for the song Never. Read the review here.

Paul Weller – On Sunset … It has been 43 years since The Jam‘s In The City heralded the beginning of Weller‘s career – that now spans 15 widely diverse solo albums. As usual, Weller bounces a little bit all over the musical spectrum – but the result is always honest, and in this case, definitely worth a listen. Listen for the tracks Village and On Sunset. Read the review here.

Sparks – A Steady Drip, Drip, DripSparks brothers duo, Ron and Russell Mael, return with their 24th album – continuing to push the musical spectrum, even after a 50 year career. Some call it quirky – but I like it! Tune in now to listen to the songs Self-Effacing and Left Out In the Cold. Read the review here.

The Explorers Club – The Explorers Club … Led by Jason Brewer, the band released two albums on July 10th – this self-titled release and an album of covers (see below). This collection of a dozen originals melds together the sounds of bands like The Beach Boys, The Turtles, Three Dog Night, and Sweet and delivers a flawlessly-crafted sound that sounds like early ‘70s AM radio. All of it is impeccably written, performed and produced. Listen for the tracks Somewhere Else and Ruby. Read the review here.

The Explorers Club – To Sing And Be Born Again … For more than a decade now, the band (led by Jason Brewer) have been bringing their brand of ear candy pop to listeners. Listen for the song I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite (originally recorded by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart). Read the review here.

Stewart Lindsey – Amitié … This is the second album from the band, which is comprised of Eurythmics veteran Dave Stewart and Thomas Lindsey. It is definitely not the Eurythmics (there are no synths to be found) – but the album is authentic and honest with great playing and singing. Listen for the track Hold On. Read the review here.

Ray Wylie Hubbard – Co-Starring … One of the first musical “Outlaws” and an icon in the roots world, this album finds the artist joined by an array of guest artists. Listen for the song Bad Trick, which features Ringo Starr, Don Was, Joe Walsh and Chris Robinson. Read the review here.

Neil Young – Homegrown … This album sat in the artist’s archives – unreleased – since 1975. It is the “unheard bridge” between two acoustic-based albums, the 1972 classic Harvest and 1978’s Comes a Time, but because of the personal nature of the songs – and the heartache he was going through at the time – he chose not to release it until now. It was worth the wait! Listen for the tracks Vacancy and White Line. Read the review here.

Champlin Williams Friestedt – CWF 2 … This band consists of former Chicago singer Bill Champlin, former Toto singer Joseph Williams, and Swedish guitarist/producer Peter Friestedt. They recorded their first album in 2015, an EP in 2018 – but this new album has delivered the AOR goods with a very Chicago/Toto sound. Listen for the songs Runaway Dancer and Love In the World. New Singles

The other 5 songs are all recently released singles:

Kansas – Jets Overhead … this is the third single from the band’s upcoming album The Absence Of Presense, which is scheduled for release July 17th, 2020.

Elvis Costello – No Flag … this song is a return to the artist’s punk/new wave roots and finds him expressing “the communal disgust so many of his listeners feel about their government, be it the United States or the United Kingdom.” A keeper …

The Allman Betts Band – Magnolia Road … this track is the first single from the bands second album Bless Your Heart, which is due for release on August 28th, 2020.

Bragg & Hemsworth – Tall Stories On Short Street and New World (Has Begun) … Tim Bragg and Ross Hemsworth are two talented musicians who have teamed up to produce these excellent songs. Both tracks are from their upcoming album Tall Stories On Short Street – which is due for release on July 31st, 2020. Click here to read more about this project.
