New Cheap Trick, Fleetwood Mac, Cactus & More!

I have loaded 16 recently released classic rock songs into high rotation on the station’s playlist – featuring songs from Cheap Trick, Fleetwood Mac, Cactus and more! Eleven of the songs are from the following newly released albums:

Cheap Trick - In Another World
Cheap Trick – In Another World

Cheap Trick – In Another World … You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but when the band sounds as good as this – who cares! Rick Neilsen, Robin Zander and the boys have turned out a first rate piece of power pop – that never strays much from the patented Cheap Trick sound. But why would they, when it sound this great. I fully recommend you listen to, and acquire, this record. It will be worth it! Listen for the tracks The Summer Looks Good On You, Gimme Some Truth (a John Lennon cover), Light Up The Fire and Quit Waking Me Up. Read the review here.

Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac Live (Deluxe Edition) … This deluxe version of the Live album originally released in 1980, contains a third CD of new live material from that era, recorded in different arenas (or stadiums) from around the globe. Listen for live renditions of The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown) – which was originally recorded and released by a different incarnation of the band – and the Stevie Nicks classic Sisters Of the Moon. Read the review here.

Cactus – Tightrope … This band originally hails from 1969 when former Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder’s Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day from The Amboy Dukes. The band released three hard rock albums from that era – went on to different projects – but re-formed in 2006. This latest project is a slice of pure rock and roll – with great playing, and a guest appearance by original guitar player Jim McCarty. Listen for the songs All Shook Up, Papa Was A Rolling Stone and the title track Tightrope. Turn it loud! Read the review here.

Badfinger – No Matter What: Revisiting The Hits … Sadly, there’s only one member of the iconic quartet left, that being Joey Molland who joined the group shortly after the band made a name change from The Iveys to Badfinger. He was there when the band was taken under the tutelage of The Beatles, signed to Apple Records and given their first hit, Come and Get It, courtesy of the pen of Paul McCartney. On this project, he has joined together with an impressive roster of guests (including Rick Springfield, Rick Wakeman (of Yes), Matthew Sweet and Todd Rundgren) to revisit the great songs recorded by the original band. Listen for the track No Matter What (which features Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge).  Read the review here.

Neil Young – Young Shakespeare … This album was recorded live at the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut on January 26th, 1971 and is another flawless release which sees Neil Young digging through his live recordings and releasing albums of interest. This recording captures the artist doing solo acoustic versions of some of his (at the time) most well known of songs. Of note, is that when this was recorded in 1971, half of the songs he performed hadn’t even been released – yet the audience is totally captivated throughout the performance. Listen for the song Don’t Let It Bring You DownRead the review here.

New Singles

The other 5 songs added to high rotation are all recently released singles:

Crosby Stills Nash & Young – Ivory Tower … this unreleased song from the band is taken the upcoming release of their box set for the album Deja Vu – which was originally released in 1970. The 4 CD/vinyl record box set – said to contain hours of rare and unreleased studio recordings – is due for release on May 14th, 2021.

Van Morrison – Only A Song … this single is taken from the Belfast Cowboy’s upcoming album Latest Record Project: Volume 1 – which is due for release on May 7th, 2021.

Billy Gibbons – West Coast Junkie … this song is a single from the ZZ Top guitarist’s upcoming album – Hardware – which is set to be released on June 4th, 2021.

Dennis DeYoung – Isle Of Misanthrope … the ex-Styx keyboard player and vocalist’s latest single is taken from his upcoming album – 26 East, Vol. 2 – which is due for release on June 11th, 2021. He says this will be his final record.

Mammoth WvH – Think It Over … This song is taken from the upcoming debut release from Eddie Van Halen‘s son – Wolfgang. The album – Mammoth WVH – is set to be released on June 11th, 2021.

New Starr, Sting, Strawbs, Saga and More!

I have loaded 19 recently released classic rock songs into high rotation on the station’s playlist – featuring songs from Ringo Starr, Sting, Strawbs, Saga and more! Sixteen of the songs are from the following newly released albums:

Strawbs - Settlement
Strawbs – Settlement

Strawbs – SettlementDave Cousins and the band have been releasing compelling, original music for over 50 years now. The band’s 27th album (the second by the current band members) was recorded during the global pandemic, and the music reflects the times we live in. The songs are compelling, well-played and have meaning. The perfect thing for a little progressive, sonic reflection. Listen for the tracks Judgement Day, Each Manner of Man and the title track Settlement. Read the review here.

Sting – Duets … This compilation album gathers together the former Police frontman’s collaborations with a who’s-who of pop, jazz and rock stars over the past 20 years. It features vocal duets and musical assistance from the likes of Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave fame), Mary J. Blige, Eric Clapton and Annie Lennox (of Eurythmics) – as well as jazz musicians Herbie Hancock and Chris Botti. Listen for a rousing duet with Annie Lennox on the song We’ll Be Together, and some tasty guitar work from Eric Clapton on the song It’s Probably Me. Read the review here.

Ringo Starr – Zoom In … The drummer Beatle put together this five song EP while locked down, and it features some of his famous friends lending their musical support. The songs have the usual uplifting Ringo peace and love theme – but he also heads into reggae territory on one of them – which is interesting (to say the least). Listen for the track Not Enough Love In the World. Read the review here.

Chris Cornell – No One Sings Like You Anymore … This album of cover songs was recorded in 2016, a year before the tragic passing of the Soundgarden / Audioslave singer. The songs were chosen, recorded and sequenced by Cornell with the aid of multi-instrumentalist and producer Brendan O’Brien. The album contains songs made famous by the likes of Prince, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and more. Listen for a cover of the Guns n’ Roses song Patience and a cover of the John Lennon song Watching The Wheels. Read the review here.

Steve Lukather – I Found The Sun Again … The Toto bandleader and guitarist has delivered an excellent record – where he is ably assisted by Toto bandmates David Paich and Joseph Williams – as well as Ringo Starr. The album features a mix of original and cover songs, impressively rendered by top-notch musicians. Listen for the track Along For the Ride and an extended cover of the Traffic classic The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys. Read the review here.

Joseph Williams – Denizen Tenant … This is another Toto band member’s solo album, this time featuring the Toto vocalist. Unlike Steve Lukather‘s solo effort, William‘s album is definitely more “pop” than “rock”, but the production is impeccable, the songs well-written and well-performed. Listen for a song Never Saw You Coming. Read the review here.

Black Crowes – Shake Your Money Maker (Deluxe Edition) … This version of the iconic album from the American rock and roll band celebrates it’s release 30 years ago. The box set contains some outtakes, demos and and a live concert recorded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1990. Listening to it today reminds me of just how very, very good this band was. Listen for a cover of the Humble Pie classic 30 Days In the Hole and a live version of the song She Talks To Angels. Read the review here.

Saga – Symmetry … After 40 years together, this Canadian rock/pop/prog band called it quits in 2017. This album finds them reunited and performing acoustic renditions their own songs. The results are definitely not classic Saga – but they stand on their own, with precision and craftsmanship. Listen for the track Tired World. Read the review here.

Blackmore’s Night – Nature’s Light … This is the 11th album from the band, which is lead by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple and Rainbow) and his wife Candice Night on vocals – together with a collective of various instrumentalists. Their albums all celebrate their love of Renaissance music – but with a modern flair – and on several tracks Blackmore unleashes his guitar prowess. Listen for the songs Der Letzte Musketier and Second Element. Read the review here.

New Singles

The other 3 songs are all recently released singles:

Nancy Wilson – You And Me … the Heart guitarist/vocalist’s latest single is taken from her upcoming album of the same name – You And Me – which is due for release on May 7th, 2021.

Cheap Trick – Boys & Girls & Rock n Roll … this song is a single from the band’s upcoming 20th studio album – In Another World – which is set to be released on April 9th, 2021.

Mark Farner – Never And Always … the vocalist/guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad has released this song as a single to promote the release of his upcoming DVD From Chile With Love – which is due for release on April 6th, 2021.

New Ann Wilson and Alison Solo Singles

The following two singles – from Ann Wilson and Alison Solo – were just added into high rotation on the station’s playlist:

Ann Wilson – The Hammer … The Heart vocalist wrote this song with guitarists Tyler Boley and Craig Bartock, and recorded it last fall in Seattle. It is big and booming, with a very hard rock riff – but still has those signature, powerful Ann Wilson vocals. Turn this one up loud!

Alison Solo – Weekend Warrior

Alison Solo – Weekend Warrior … I discovered this track on the singer-songwriter-multi instrumentalist’s Bandcamp page, and was immediately engaged in the spare instrumentation, lovely melody and alluring vocal performance. The song is no longer available there, but will be available from online retailers (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, etc.) on March 28th. Until then, you can enjoy it by listening to Choice Classic Rock.

New Alice, Whitesnake, and some Foo for You!

It’s been awhile, but I have finally added some new tracks into high rotation in the playlist. I invite you to tune in to Choice Classic Rock and listen for 15 recently released classic rock songs from the likes of Alice Cooper, Whitesnake, Foo Fighters and more! All the songs added into the playlist are from the following newly released albums:

Alice Cooper - Detroit Stories
Alice Cooper – Detroit Stories

Alice Cooper – Detroit Stories … Alice returns from whence he came – his hometown – Motor City – Detroit – which he calls “birthplace of angry hard rock”. The album contains covers of songs from the likes of Lou Reed, Bob Seger and Mitch Ryder – all done as only Alice can. A rockin’ great listen! Listen for the songs Rock n’ Roll, and Social Debris. Read the review here.

Whitesnake – The Blues Album … The band’s third album in the Red, White and Blue trilogy looks at the Blues Rock aspect of the band. The songs included in the package are re-mixes and updated versions originally featured on their albums released from 1982 to 2011 (including a couple of David Coverdale solo albums). Listen for the tracks Give Me All Your Love, and Slow An’ Easy. Read the review here.

Foo Fighters – Medicine At Midnight … On the band’s tenth studio album they are not content to sit on their laurels and repackage the same sound. Instead, they have refreshed things – moving in a slightly “groovier” direction, but still maintaining their strengths! Listen for the songs Chasing Birds, Making A Fire and Waiting On A War. Read the review here.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Way Down In the Rust Bucket … Recorded live at The Catalyst in November of 1990 – this album finds the artist and his most famous backing back stretching out and playing with a fierce intensity that showcases just how great and engaging they were as a live unit! Listen for the tracks Cinnamon Girl and Surfer Joe and Moe The Sleaze. Read the review here.

The Band – Stage Fright (50th Anniversary) … This deluxe boxed set of the band’s third album features a remixed – and resequenced – version of the original album, as well as a previously unreleased 1970 acoustic jam session from a Calgary hotel room, and best of all, a stunning and previously unreleased 1971 concert that captures the group at the peak of its live powers. Listen for live versions of the songs The Weight and Rag Mama Rag. Read the review here.

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians – Hunter And the Dog Star … This is the second album in the group’s new phase of existence, having come together with plenty of reunion fireworks with their album Rocket in 2018. The album contains some great, thoughtful, well-constructed songs – brought to life by the Brickell‘s uniquely impactful voice. Listen for the songs Sleeve and My Power. Read the review here.

Arc Of Life – Arc Of Life … This is a new band, featuring current Yes members Billy Sherwood and Jon Davison, with Jay Schellen (Yes’ unofficial touring drummer), Jimmy Haun (who played guitar on the 1991 Yes album Union and worked with former Yes bassist Chris Squire) and Dave Kerzner (keyboardist formerly with Sound Of Contact). So, the is band “Yes-like” without actually copying Yes. If you like tuneful, progressive-style rock, I highly recommend this album. Listen for the tracks I Want To Know You Better and You Make It Real. Read the review here.

Paul McCartney – McCartney III … To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of his very first solo album (way back in 1970!) the ex-Beatle went into the studio and recorded this album, where he plays nearly all of the instruments on all of the songs. Dave Mason – Alone Together Again … Speaking of 50th Anniversaries of great albums – ex-Traffic guitar player Dave Mason has recorded an updated 2020 version of his very first solo album – Alone Together.
